The small, picturesque town hasn’t changed since she visited four years ago, with one exception – the presence of a handsome, mysterious boy named Frost. Despite warnings from her grandparents and friends to stay away from Frost, Anastasia can’t deny their attraction, and the more time they spend together, the deeper in love they fall. Unfortunately, Frost has a secret that is beyond Anastasia’s wildest imagination, and she soon finds herself in the midst of a supernatural legend that has haunted Cedar Falls for years.

General Overview:

Frostbitten is a weave of cute romance with paranormal tale. A pure YA novel written with mesmerizing description of Canadian winter as its background. A cute romantic story of two young hearts who seek solace in each other’s company. A light read which touches your heart with its sweetness and grips you by the end with its astonishing suspense.

The story is about a seventeen-year-old girl, joining Cedar Falls High. There she meets a boy named Frost who is treated as an outcast. Befriending him, makes her a target of many students who try to make her life a living hell. In the midst of all these happenings, Cedar Falls faces a threat from an unknown predator. With the unfolding of long hidden secrets, the relation of Frost and Anastasia is also tested.

Anastasia was sketched out nicely. She is a typical teenager who is facing the teenage problems of rebellion, peer pressure, reputation-building, bullying. Only child of a single parent, she is sent to her grandparents’ house when she falls into deep trouble. Basically a bright student, she is struggling to write a new chapter of her life.

I could connect with her anger, her frustration, her struggles as a teenager. Many at times it happens that a person wants to start afresh in his life, but his past keeps haunting him. His doings of the past come across him at every turn. People around start judging that person by the false reputation which precedes him, rather than looking beyond. All this can surely lead to the type of behaviour which Anastasia shows in this story. Anastasia’s strength to persevere against the odds is so admirable.

The author had carved Frost as a true gentleman. Calm, contained, sensible and loving. Though disliked by people around him, he doesn’t allow that negativity to seep inside him. He mostly keeps to himself and is cordial to everyone who approaches him.

Other characters were beautifully casted but weren’t impressive enough to leave the mark.

Story-line was adequately paced. Regular events in the story kept the interest intact. The incidents involving the school and her friends were very realistic. So much so, that sometimes I felt my emotions taking over my reader persona. I used to feel angry if Anastasia was wronged or she was being misunderstood by others. The author really got me engaged.

The blend of paranormal phenomena with a teenage story was done skilfully. It mingled with the whole track completely. The end chapter was splendid providing a whole new level of suspense to this supernatural series.

Some personality traits of the characters were so realistic. Frost’s dilemma of sharing the secret with Anastasia, his desperation of finding his roots, his fear of losing his love can be so well understood. The skill of the author, in demonstrating such thoughts and emotions so realistically, is commendable.

The writing is absolutely delightful. The flow is smooth and appealing. The descriptive parts of the story are totally stunning. The author has outdone herself while describing the beauty of woods during winter.

I couldn’t comprehend the sudden change in Grandfather’s behaviour towards Frost. Throughout the book, one can feel the animosity between the two but by the end, there is a change which is not only unexpected but one for which there is no logical explanation.
