Peek A Boo

To save her, he must let go of everything he ever believed.

Upon returning to her hometown for her grandmother’s funeral, Sage Matthews is terrorized by a series of strange events. She dismisses each eerie occurrence as a by-product of her overwrought emotional state, until it becomes chillingly clear that something not of this world is desperate to get a message—or is it a warning?—through to her…

Detective Sergeant Ethan Blade comes to Cryton, South Australia, to catch a serial killer. When Ethan meets Sage—the latest victim’s beautiful granddaughter—his attraction to her is explosive and inconvenient. He knows she’s not crazy, but Sage’s theory about the murders is unbelievable.

With the handsome detective rejecting her ideas, Sage embarks on the supernatural journey that her grandmother started. What she discovers shatters everything Sage ever knew about herself—and who she really is.

Ethan’s routine case quickly turns personal when he discovers Sage is the killer’s next target. For her, he’ll break all the rules and cross every line. But how can he protect Sage from an evil he cannot even conceive of?

Book Review

My Take

I received this book from the author via Reading Alley. The author from Australia surely impressed me with her story-telling skills.

The story, from the very first page, was a complete thriller. This non-stop, page-turner novel presented an array of events which compelled me to finish the book in one go. The thrilling experience enhanced due to the paranormal dimension. The sounds, the background noises, the time of events, the place of action described by the author just brought the scenes to another level. It is commendable as the efforts of the author surely brought out good results.

From the word ‘Go’, an amazing string of events commenced which helped in escalating the thrilling meter every now and then.

Yes, the pace of the book was really good. It is worth mentioning because there was no slack at any given point in time. This helped in keeping the thrilling atmosphere of the book intact. With the steady speed of the story and the turning points occurring at regular intervals, the book was an enjoyable read.

In comparison to the books having a heavy vocabulary and too elaborate style of writing, I personally prefer the ones where the authors convey their thoughts through simple words. Somehow, it brings my reader-self more close to the book. With the use of simple sentences, Athena successfully weaved a fascinating story which I could easily connect with.

She totally had control over the story. There were no instances where I could find that the story was being dragged or got side-tracked. The description of things and surroundings was optimum thereby helping in keeping the focus on the characters and their emotions.

The two main characters of the story were indeed well-developed. They have been shown to possess strong opinions. One viewed every occurrence with a logical reason and the other accepted the possibility of ‘something beyond’ the logic. The reason why their thought-process was so different from each other was also explained thereby providing the reader with a clear picture of their personality. The interesting part to watch was the instant chemistry between them in spite of their clash in opinions.

The story, although paranormal and lying in the lines of Fantasy, was not just spun out from thin air. The parts of the story where the team of professionals who record the data for paranormal activity was involved was a very genuine concept. The detailed description of how they perform the process of recording such data was quite exciting. I really had goosebumps when the team showed proofs of spirits standing beside the protagonist (Believe me, when I say that after reading that part in the story, I started checking my personal space every now and then).
